Women, minorities made blockbusters in 2016: MPAA

Female audiences and non-Caucasian ethnic groups built the largest movie-goer experience in the US this year, MPAA 2016 report notes.

Female audiences and non-Caucasian ethnic groups have built the largest movie-goer experience in the United States, MPAA 2016 report says.

Women movie-goers skewed slightly higher than men, with a population ratio of 51 percent to 49 percent, respectively, the Motion Picture Association of America recently reported.

Disney/Pixar’s ‘Finding Dory’ was followed by Universal/Illumination’s ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and then Disney’s live-action remake ‘The Jungle Book’ in attracting a majority-stake female audience in US theaters so far this year.

‘Finding Dory’ drew 55 percent of female viewers, while ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and ‘The Jungle Book’ attracted 54 percent and 52 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, three Disney movies grabbing the attention of most ethnically diverse audiences, include ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Finding Dory’, and ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

While the number of Caucasians going to the movies declined, Asian/Other and African-American audiences increased, the report also said.

The Asian/Other demo is now the fastest-growing group of theater attendees, with frequent moviegoers in the age brackets of 25-39 and 18-24 being the largest the fastest-growing age demo, respectively
